Propane Fireplaces
Propane fireplaces are clean-burning, flexible alternatives to wood or coal burning fireplaces. They burn the same liquefied propane gas used to heat many homes and fuel barbecue grills. Propane gas fireplaces may be required in some environmentally sensitive jurisdictions. There are many options in propane gas fireplaces.
A propane fireplace can closely mimic a standard fireplace, being built into a wall or corner with a mantel, chimney, hearth, etc. Propane fireplace inserts are compact appliances that slip right into an existing fireplace opening, replacing wood and grate. A propane fireplace insert can contain artificial propane fireplace logs, made of metal or ceramic, that emit flickering propane flames to simulate crackling logs. But many owners prefer propane fireplace designs that take advantage of propane's unique characteristics.
A vent-free propane fireplace needs no chimney or flue. The propane burns so cleanly that there is no need to exhaust smoke to the outdoors. But a ventless propane fireplace should be used only occasionally and for relatively short periods of time, because it consumes oxygen that is not easily replaced via a vent. A large room with adequate air circulation is required for safe use of a ventless propane fireplace.
A vented propane fireplace should be used in bedrooms, basements, and other small rooms with relatively low air circulation. Direct vent technology uses a coaxial air inlet/exhaust pipe: one pipe inside of a larger pipe. A direct vent propane fireplace exhausts smoke through the inner pipe and draws fresh air from outside through the outer pipe. A direct vent propane fireplace requires no chimney to carry smoke and ash high above the dwelling; the vent can run through the house at some inconspicuous point. There are no cold drafts with unlit direct vent propane fireplaces.
Portability is a fine feature of some propane gas fireplaces. A propane fireplace heater and its bottle of propane gas can be carried from room to room, providing heat and cheer exactly where needed. Portable propane fireplace heaters should have automatic shutoff valves which turn off the flow of propane gas if the unit tips over. They should never be placed within two feet of a wall, on combustible carpeting, or near plants, curtains, or small children.
Propane fireplaces provide the heat, light, and cozy ambiance of traditional fireplaces without the mess or air pollution. They can be as simple and inexpensive, or grand and pricey as you wish. Consider a propane gas fireplace for your next home improvement.
